“kogarashi 2” crane Song of the day: Surrender by Basecamp @basecampmusique Allow me to introduce to you bird #2 of the ‘kogarashi’ (木枯らし) mini-collection. As I mentioned before, I used the same gorgeous Awagami paper to fold the crane and to create the wings, and then I added my “fingerprint” with a selection of acrylic paints. It has been snowing steadily since this morning back here and things are starting to get covered in snow again. Everything is so bright and crisp and clean! I wanted to say hello to all the new followers, welcome! One last thing – in my stories, I invited everyone who enjoys drawing or painting to have a go at recreating one of my cranes, on paper, in their own style and then use the hashtag #IcarusOnPaper so that I can see what lovely stuff you guys came up with. Feel free to give it a try! Have a wonderful Thursday! #origami #acrylic #acrylicpaint #cristianmarianciuc #icarusmidair #mixedmedia #木枯らし #paper #paperart

“kogarashi 1” crane Song of the day: In evergreen by @rhodamusic_ Bird #1 of from the new mini-collection. I am still celebrating the amazing ‘shirakaba’ paper from Awagami, but this time, it carries on it the weight of paint. I decided to call this series ‘kogarashi’ (木枯らし), a Japanese word which loosely translates to ‘leaf-wilting wind’ or the wind that marks the beginning of winter. I carefully selected a palette that would evoke the beauty of the decay that gets covered by snow this time of the year. Right after I took this photo, I had a closer look at the patterns in the paint, and I could see a few faces staring back at me, which I found fascinating. #origami #acrylic #acrylicpaint #cristianmarianciuc #icarusmidair #mixedmedia #木枯らし #paper #paperart

“Yōkai” crane 1 Song of the day: Sinka by Howie Lee @howieleeofficial “Yōkai” is a generic name given to a host of supernatural beings in Japanese folklore. They can be monsters, spirits, demons and so on. They can be anything from evil, to cheeky to not-that-bad. I’ve wanted to explore this theme for quite a while, and I’m happy to be able to share with you some of my interpretations. I got particularly frustrated when I photographed today’s crane. It was one of those days when I just couldn’t get a shot I was happy with. But I hope I’ll look back at it tomorrow or in a few days and realized there was nothing to worry about. So, my first yōkai is a shapeshifter. It’s a scaly dragon in mid-transformation from its human form. I decided to create kimonos for all the cranes in this mini-series. I was given some absolutely gorgeous washi paper from someone in Japan and I just had to use it. I hope you like these creatures as much as I do. I tried to put in as many fine details as I could. #origami #icarusmidair #cristianmarianciuc #yokai #monster #kimono #wings #washi #miniature #妖怪 #japanese

“Hades” crane Song of the day: Hyperballad by Björk @bjork Looking at today’s finished crane, I get a deep sense of sadness mixed with gratitude. It’s one of those situations when I feel that it’s not me who’s created this bird. A very strange feeling! I wanted to give Hades a serene personality, I wanted him to inspire awe. With him being the Greek god of the underworld and the dead, I wanted to play on contrasts. On a completely unrelated topic (well, not completely unrelated), I’ve been watching lots of pregnancy announcement videos on YouTube. Yes, I know it’s strange. I know! But don’t you also sometimes go from video to video and end up in a – let’s call it “unexpected place” on there? Don’t you give me that disapproving look! Anyway, it’s so touching to see people’s reactions. Especially those of dads-to-be. To see the look on their faces and the avalanche of emotions, the overwhelming hit of joy, it’s really heartwarming. Life is so precious! I suppose that the fact I’m one of 11 kids myself and that I have 15 nephews and nieces already might explain a few things, haha! Back to birds and paper and mythology! I have one more mythology-themed bird coming up, for now. And next week, most of the birds will go to my Etsy shop. I say most of them because some of you lovely people already called dibs on a couple of them, hehe. Thanks so much for that! Okay, I’m done now. This was weird, right? No? Okay! Great! #origami #icarusmidair #mythology #hades #white #blackandwhite #wings #wings #paperart #papercut #craft #diy #paper #feathers #feather #owl #falcon #hawk #eagle #delicate #miniature

“my soul was born in September” crane Song of the day: Calescent by Will Samson @will.samson Today’s crane is a collaboration with @deerandbeard. I’ve enjoyed his beautiful art for so long, he was one of the first people I followed here, on Instagram. I used a few of his drawings to create the feathers, and I tried to give a nod to his style with the overall look of the bird. I have a few other collaborations coming up, and I always love “mashing” up my vision with that of other talented artists! I will crawl back to my bed now, it’s been the perfect September rainy day: perfect for a hot cuppa and listening to the rain on my ceiling window. Bliss! #origami #gold #icarusmidair #deerandbeard #collaboration #illustration #drawing #paperart #feathers #wings

“mid-air” crane Song of the day: Them is us by Rival Consoles @rivalconsoles Last night I went to sleep listening to the most restless winds I’ve experienced in a long time. It’s still grey and windy today, but I’ll grab the coat I bequeathed from grandpa and go out for a walk. I have a piece of paper with some ideas jotted on it for a handful of intricate cranes that I hope to sink my teeth in for the remainder of the week. They will then be available for purchase in my Etsy shop (link in my profile). Today’s crane kept me company pretty much all day yesterday. I attached the last minuscule feathers right before jumping in bed. I hope to have infused some of the wild weather in its wings. I shall be off now: dear late October, send some more inspiration my way, won’t you? #origami #icarusmidair #paperart #feathers #papercutting #wings #blue #bird #crane #delicate #intricate

“birds of different feathers“ crane Song of the day: When the party’s over by Billie Eilish @wherearetheavocados #WHPDressUp Behold the mighty Grus Japonensis dressed up as a colorful macaw. I love giving my cranes new personalities and identities, especially when using inspiration from other birds. Lately, I’ve accumulated quite the collection with photos of birds and their plumage here, on @Instagram. Each one of them is a wonderful creation! And I find endless inspiration in them. Early next week, this crane along with a few others (and a couple of papercut pieces) will land in my Etsy shop. (link in my profile) Until then, have a wonderful weekend! Anatomy of a broken body – sticks and stones (i) Song of the day: Call my name by Favela @musicfavela #WHPshine It’s been a quiet few weeks on my account. In my head, I’ve been sharing daily cranes without a break since the day I finished my 1000 days project. It so happens that many of these cranes do not have a body. I fold and decorate a crane every single day. I start the moment I get out of bed, which lately has been ridiculously early – think 4:45 am! These invisible cranes are not made of paper, or flowers. They are made out of time, from seconds to hours, to months! And although I wish I could have created physical birds more often, I believe this had to be a time of repose. Here we are! A new mini-series is in the works, focusing on some of my obsessions which revolve around anatomy. I will try and not let a week go by without adding a new crane to this flock, but I cannot promise anything! I am currently listening to the album where today’s song “lives” – Community by Favela. I’d say it’s the 16th time I’ve listened to it, hehe! Sending you all some of the sunshine that is blessing us here, in Somerset! “eden” crane Song of the day: Wake up by Eden @iameden Yesterday was one of the most delightful days, in terms of weather, in these past 7 months since I moved to the UK. Today however, we’re back to the good, old gloomy and grey sky that I’ve learned to love. I’ve been collecting flowers and leaves recently and they have been sitting on my windowsill, to my left. I love how they’ve preserved most of their colours and scent. The pink flowers in particular smell like peppermint mixed with fresh hay. (I just put all the leftover flowers in my hand so I can get another whiff and decide what they actually smell like). I will now leave my desk and start cooking lunch: spicy chicken curry again. And then I will sit back at my desk and watch a couple of old Great British Bake Off episodes. More cranes to come soon! x #origami #icarusmidair #floral #botanical #leaf #flowers #miniature #eden #whpwildthing
